If you look closely at the layered architectural landscapes of Utah, you will find appealing textures, colors and patterns. These characteristics are beautiful on the surface, but they are also beautiful because of their depth.
Over millennia, wind, creeks and rivers have eroded elaborate cross sections through epoch deep layers of rock to expose fine-grained layers of stratification and constantly changing landscapes.
The design for the Strata Lounge Chair was inspired by the concept of forces gradually exposing the end-grain of much deeper laminations.
And just like the exposed layers of sandstone, the beauty is both in the topographical form, and also in the natural variations inherent in these layers.
The chair is constructed from dozens of individually shaped layers of birch. Each layer and each chair with its own unique natural characteristics.
The design of our furniture products is intended to echo these unique topographical forms.
The Strata Lounge Chair was designed for relaxing, but also to add unique sculptural qualities to a space.
Each lamination of the Strata Lounge Chair is cut with a computer numeric controlled (CNC) router.
Strategically placed holes and short dowels allow self-alignment during the glue-up and clamping process.
Voids are also cut from the laminations to reduce the assembled chair’s weight. To reduce material waste, pieces for wooden toys are cut from the spaces between chair components.
The chair was designed to meet the pillars of modern living: comfort, longevity, and sustainability.
And over time in your household they will develop their own patinas and their own:
histories.
