Build a Mechanical Dinosaur Toy

The Tectonic Utahceratops is a fun educational kit that will help you learn more about a unique dinosaur, and some engineering principles too.

The Tectonic Utahceratops Kit was inspired by the Utahceratops gettyi which lived in Utah approximately 76 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. This horn-faced dinosaur was a strong, ground-dwelling, herbivore that could grow as long as 23 feet. The Utahceratops gettyi was named after Mike Getty, Paleontology Collections Manager and Chief Preparator at the Natural History Museum of Utah from 1999 to 2013. One of the main distinguishing features of the Utahceratops is that the central horn is located entirely behind the nasal cavity.

What do we mean by “tectonic”? Two things: 1) the dynamic movement of the toy’s shoulder blades are a reference to the geological shifting of tectonic plates; and 2) we mean “transparent technology” - a reference to the exposed mechanical systems of this toy.

This articulating toy uses a parallelogram to control motion. The parallelogram has the wonderful ability to collapse and change shape which is why it is used in numerous mechanisms including excavators, steering assemblies, scissor lifts, landing gear, and lift gates.

The Tectonic Utahceratops comes as a kit of parts.  It is not a motorized toy.
